the real aspect of that 2000 is way cheap compared to most racing. even go karts. you need 5 sets of tires to be in a competitive series about a weekend. may skate by using old ones for practice and hot laps but set ups wont be spot on. And the motor my buddy put in his I could build a nice ls/vtec for hahaha. And defiantly dont get started in adding the cost of dirt circles. I think travel would be the killer part of it.

To autocross it costs you the price of a stock car and $30.

Just to do Lemons (cheap amateur road racing) where you race $500 cars costs our team $3000 a race. The first race cost us $5500 after prepping the car. A year of 7 races will cost us $21,000 divided by 5 to 6 of us. Plus you need about $1500 worth of safety gear you wear.

To go amateur on your own... look at fronting at least all that by yourself with no sponsorships for maybe 2 races. You need to have already WON big name races to attract sponsorship if not seasons of races.

At 17 to go pro your best bet was to start racing karts at the age of 12 (and not karts the public can pay $20 bux to drive, we're talking serious karting), so you better get after it now hardcore by starting at the autox level, kicking ass and getting into some schools for road race events. Your looking at 5-6 yrs before you can even attract a real sponsor or go amateur/pro.

They aren't noob questions if you are trying to learn more about things. Asking the question is not the stupidity, its not asking it that is stupid. Bottom line on everything being talked about here is that you don't need huge amounts of money to learn these skills.
Schools are everywhere in the U.S. but unfortunately not here in iowa. Does that mean you are screwed, NO, it just means you have to figure out a different way to learn. Best way is the way Gabe, Prez and the other guys are learning. The biggest thing to remember is that you absolutely cannot go into these events thinking you are the "biggest bad ass in the world". That title will always get you nowhere fast. You have to put all your thoughts aside and take in every little thing everyone says....whether good or bad....or as we call it (constructive criticisms).
Chunky said the one thing I believe in the most..............the first mod for your car IS YOU!! Everyones pricing break up is just the small end of this part of racing. This hobby will get far more expensive when you REALLY start buying the parts that are constantly in use.
I can only wish I could get Anthony (the guy i mentioned before for SCCA) in here to explain the break down of this. This all has to be in your blood and you must be willing to spend A LOT of time invested into it and absolute determination. It absolutely sucks to not have the resources that most other states have when it comes down to ANY kind of racing. This is the reason why these guys are trying to get the events going......to motivate and stimulate more people into getting involved. They want to make sure that all those "high dollar" parts you are buying just to drive around can get used. They are also trying to show people how to REALLY drive a car and know what their limits and the cars limits are.

All in all dalawoi, you gotta start small to be up there in the big leagues..............and always remember something that even my wife reminds me about...lol......"You can't have it all".

well it seems I just need to take as much time as i possibly can to go to these events. And feel my car out. Talk to people and just get advice. I may not have 7k right now to prep my car. But I can start slow and build up. My DA is what I would like to build. Start with making a quality reliable built motor. And work my way from suspension to interior work. If Prez can get into the sport then I can. Just maybe not for a couple years.... Always awesome to find someone thats met your goals so you can bounce a question or two off them tho

Couldn't agree more with what you said........just think of all this not so much as a money burden, it is a fun thing. I hate it when people (and pardon the expression) "BITCH" about how expensive everything is and "how time consuming" it is. This is something that is supposed to be fun and there is one thing I know for sure.....when you make something fun you get a lot more out of it.

I always try giving people this advice from my own experience.......listen up...lol....

I have a small in home business (the shop as I call it).......I always try my best to have fun with doing mechanical and decal stuff there. The one second of my life I end up hating doing this will be the day I won't be in business. Business's out there take work too seriously and it is because of the bills they have to pay etc. I do the same stuff they do in a smaller scale, bring the same quality of work in every job and I still have fun doing it. In the end I have so much fun with it I actually don't mind learning a new thing or two. The fun in it is what makes it worth doing every day.....frustration with a part that won't come out or something that goes wrong is part of the fun.

If you apply the same mentality to these events I can guarantee you that you'll not only have fun but your brain won't even notice you picked up one skill you didn't have before. Try to remember how BORING freagggin' school is and how much of the info learned is gone by the end of the day.

I always see people "GETTING OUT OF THE GAME" only because they loose interest in what they are doing or are bored with it. The fact is building a car that the GODS will approve of just to drive around town and break because the roads are shit.....well, can get boring after awhile. This is why I always ask if your car will have a purpose other then catchin' some ass downtown...lol If it doesn't then it is a guarantee you will get bored with it and move on.

In Jeremy's case, he upgraded to a newer version of his vehicle to keep learning more and to keep testing his limits etc. Gabe is the same way except his gets improvements on already worn parts..........it is all one huge cycle that when FUN is applied to.........can last you a lifetime.

So, I say for anyone reading all my jibba jabba................just get off your ass............get in your car, go to these events and learn something good!

you forgot the all important ending...... HAVE SOME FUCKING FUN

I look forward to seeing the cars at the booth at the world of wheels show! And all the autox I can attend. Ill start out in my civic until my teggy is up and running. Which this is just more motivation to get it there really! Then its the fun part building your car!

Either people have the passion for cars or they dont its as simple as that. Some people play the game and get out. But me racing anything with wheels and a motor has been all I could talk about since i've discovered Nascar, Lemans, dirtbikes, indy, and grand am series. that was when i was like 6. Never had the money till now when i got my own job The people that quit call it a hobby. the ppl who stick with it calls cars a lifestyle i'll always be around cars no matter what!

i say built the suspension before the motor, hp helps but in small 'track' like auto-x: suspension and most importantly tires will drop your time more than hp. but this year just go out race your stock car and upgrade slowly so you know what part works and what doesnt. its actually best way to learn!

gabe auto-x for several years before he even did a swap. his sohc was still beating alot cars in his class. its driver skills and suspension/tires help the most, hp is just bonus. track is so short most places you wont even reach 60-70mph lol

FIXED...lol^^^

In reality Dalawoi..............your best bet is to start with no modifications at all. The reason why is this way you can test all the limits of the vehicle in stock form, then as you get suspension set up you can notice the difference right away and even shave off seconds off your times.

Remember what I said before.........Start small and work your way to the top. That was meant for both the sport and the modifications on the vehicle.

If we didn't make it to the drivers meeting on the 6th we can still come out to these correct? what all do we have to do before the event? I am assuming a drivers meeting before the event on location? and tech inspection? How much does it cost to run?

Of-course you can still come to the events. The driver's meeting on Sunday was just an excuse for us to get together and hang out and have a brief informal meeting about the upcoming season.

A valid driver's license, road-worthy car and desire to have fun is pretty-much all that is required to participate.

Yes, first step for each event is to arrive early, between 8 & 8:30am is the best time. Next step, get your car tech inspected, then you'll register. After that you'll want to walk the course multiple times so you have an idea of the path you'll be driving.

A mandatory driver's meeting is always held before we officially start the driving and that's usually around 10:30am.

$20 - pre-registered for SCCA member
$30 - pre-registered for non-member
$25 - day-of register for SCCA member
$35 - day-of register for non-member

Hope to see you there! Tell them Gabe sent you.

You have two weeks.

First event link to register...

http://www.motorsportreg.com/index.c...887CA551175B50

Register if you think you "might" show up.. it saves you 5 bux and your not required to come if can't make it last minute. Money is taken at the event, and if you don't show we just toss out your pre-filled out form.
