Msg Need help! Have no idea what to do!

Hello,
My friend just bought a 1996 Honda accord and when he shifts it into drive and he starts to apply the gas the car boggs down and then dies. It idles just fine. The check engine light isn't on. The guy he bought it from said something about a relay. Here's some more info on it. It is an automatic trans, typical F22A1, SOHC VTEC. Any ideas?

If it was a relay it wouldn't start often.

Check your timing.

96's didn't come with the F22A1 it came with the F22BX. it must have been swapped before could be issues with previous swap.

Another possibility could also be a clogged cat.
