Default 90 Accord Fuel Gauge

Hey guys,

A number of years ago I ran my fuel gauge down until the light came on trying to see how far I could go on a tank. I filled up and the gauge decided to go up and down and then just stopped in the down position.

I've been driving for years without the fuel gauge and have only ran out of gas once, haha! (It was winter and I must have let it warm up too much...) I'm wondering if any of you have any experience with this.

I know that it is more than likely one of two things:
1. The floater that tells the sender where to position the needle is off its arm and thus making the arm sit at the bottom like a rock.
2. I need a new fuel sending unit.

I don't want to drop the tank if I don't absolutely need to or spend money on a new sending unit if I don't have to.

Thoughts? Thank you in advance.

It could possibly be the fuel sending unit, or possibly your cluster since the fuel gauge in the Accord are more fragile.

You could try to replace the cluster and see if it works, if not it's the fuel sending unit.

I would have guess that it would be the sending unit more than the gauges. Then again different gauges have stopped working for sporadic periods of time in the past...

I've read conflicting info all over. There is an access panel in the trunk, but most things say to drop the tank. I've read that you can do this through the access panel, but I've also read that you still have to drop the tank because the sending unit doesn't fit through it. LAME!
