Default My Phoenix/Grand Canyon Trip

Sup folks. Just got back from vacation in Phoenix today with my g/f. Her uncle works for Weitz and he's down there working on their Skytrain system (actually, he's in charge of the whole project) so we thought we'd go down for a few days while she had spring break to get away from this winter weather.

It was awesome! The temp lows in Phoenix were still higher than the highs in Boston. If you've never been, I suggest you go! Anyway, on to pics.

The 2nd day we were there, we decided we needed some transportation to get around. All they had were Fords, which sucked, but my girlfriend insisted on getting "the shiny black one" which was this Ford Taurus SEL.

It's not a bad car if you ask me - and we were the first to ever rent this car. Only had 28 miles (which was the drive from the dealer to the airport) on it and it didn't do too bad on gas mileage from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon (223 miles/ 3.5 hours) doing 80 mph the whole way. Once you get out of Phoenix, the speed limit on the highway is 75 mph

The Grand Canyon is ... well, grand. Haha. You know it's a huge area, but you don't know how huge once you actually get there and see it first hand.

I got to snapping pics right away.

1st pano I have of it:

Desert View was our destination. Had a pretty cool watchtower.

Thought this was pretty cool

So after that, my g/f thought it would be a GREAT idea for us to park the car and take shuttle to a trail. My version of a trail is a dirt path through the woods. This was her version:

Down one level:

Couldn't complain about the view though:

Squirrel followed us around hoping for us to feed it.

As the title states, he had the best view in the house:

Now we had to trek back the 1.5 miles. ALL UPHILL

(^^You can barely see where we came down the trail on the side of the cliff. There's a V-shape in the cliff on the top right side of the pic)

The next day, we decided to hike up Camelback Mountain, which wasn't all that bad except the trails were all rocks/rocky (hard on the knees)

I guess whoever saw the mountain first thought it looked like a camelback and named it so.

I prefer the name, Cameltoe ... hahaha. I should add - all I saw the whole time were hot ASU chicks, but all I could do was stare discreetly b/c I was with my g/f and her uncle. So if you guys ever find yourselves in Phoenix, definitely hike this mountain!

Anyway, this was the trek up. As you can see - rocks.

The view of the peak from the "saddle" (we didn't go all the way up b/c we had to be at a dinner in a few hours)

And the other side (southwest)

And that's all I have for pics. Hope you guys liked em.

It's a must! Just dress warmly - it's kinda weird b/c you think it's the desert and it will be warm, but you're actually 6000-7000 ft above sea level.

Definitely. And go climb Camelback Mountain too - lots of hot ASU girls.

Buy a plane and NBA Finals ticket - I'm sure it will be LA/Boston again this year.

We lucked out with her uncle working down there, and had some free vouchers from AA for screwing up our XMas flight.

South Rim I think. We came up from Phoenix and went down the Desert View road.

Great pics Drew! Funny that you mentioned that thing about the mountains looking like a camel's back. The lady and I went to a place called "Garden of the Gods" in Denver, Colorado during spring break. On the trail they had this huge rock thing that looks like two camels kissing, so they named it "Kissing Camels" lol. I'll post pics soon to show you.

Canon EF-S 17-85mm, Canon EF-S 18-55 non-IS and Canon EF 50mm II.
Canon Rebel XT and Canon 40D

If you click on the pic, it should take you to my Flickr page, and if you click on "Actions - View Exif Data" it should tell you all the specs - body, lens, focal length, f/ stop, etc.

Wait, isn't this a waste of a thread and he should have just added them to the photography thread just like you told me?

Anyways, enough calling out double standards..

Nice pics Andrew!

Nice pics! I just got back from phoenix Sunday. You're definitely right about not realizing the size of the grand canyon until you see it. And Phoenix has the nicest roads I've ever seen! Can't wait to move down there.

Great pix Andrew. Someday I'll take the family there. However...I need my boys to grow up a little more so my wife doesn't have to worry about them jumping off the cliffs. They like to jump off everything...the Grand Canyon is a bit above their limit right now.

Definitely. Even if you're not into all the hiking, it's still a fun time.

Yup, roads are smooth Phoenix and curvy through the mountains up north.

I saw lots of families there. Just bring one of those backpack leashes to keep them from running off and jumping. lol
